New Delhi, Oct 8 (SocialNews.XYZ) Delhi Lieutenant Governor T.S. Sandhu on Thursday inaugurated the opening ceremony of the DDA Sports Cup (Hockey) at Yamuna Sports Complex.
The tournament is being organised in line with the vision of the Prime Minister’s Fit India Movement, launched in 2019 to encourage people, particularly the youth, to make sports and fitness an integral part of their lives, said a DDA statement.
The growing participation of young people in different sporting disciplines reflects this positive change, it said.
The event was attended by Vishwas Nagar MLA Om Prakash Sharma and DDA Vice Chairman N. Saravana Kumar, along with senior DDA officials, coaches, participating teams and young hockey players.
In a separate development, the Lieutenant Governor interacted with the young athletes of Delhi Sports School, under Delhi Sports University, and heard about their training, aspirations and sporting journeys.
“Emphasising the need to nurture young talent, he called for creating the right opportunities and ecosystem for them to excel and reach their full potential, taking Delhi’s sporting prowess to new heights towards a fitter, stronger #ViksitDilli,” wrote Lok Niwas on X.
The DDA Sports Cup brings together 11 teams from Delhi-NCR, with around 220 players, coaches and support staff participating in the tournament.
The event provides young hockey players an opportunity to compete, gain match experience and showcase their talent, while promoting discipline, teamwork and sportsmanship.
The tournament is being held from October 8 to 18, with October 11 and 12 as rest days, covering a total of nine playing days. It follows a league-cum-knockout format and will feature 20 matches, comprising 12 league matches, four quarter-finals, two semi-finals, a third-place match and the final. The final will be played on October 18.
Hockey has a special place in India’s sporting history and has inspired generations of young Indians to take up the sport. The DDA Sports Cup seeks to provide young players with competitive exposure and an opportunity to develop their skills through regular match experience, the statement said.
DDA has played an important role in taking sports infrastructure closer to the people of Delhi. It currently manages 19 Sports Complexes, 4 Mini Sports Complexes and 3 Golf Courses across the city. These facilities provide opportunities for people, particularly young people, to participate in sports, pursue fitness and develop their skills.
